World's largest democracy takes to the polls

Millions lined up to vote in India in an election expected to produce a coalition government. There was sporadic election-related violence as Maoist rebels, hoping to enforce an election boycott, attacked election and security officials. Some 2 million security officials have been deployed to protect polling stations against the insurgents. More than 700 million people are eligible to select leaders from more than 1,000 parties.
